Happy Valentine's Day from Planned Parenthood

Dear Friends,

This is from Planned Parenthood. Unfortunately, the heart-shaped condom would not copy and paste so you will just have to imagine it.

Caroline

Chocolates, hearts, flowers ... and condoms. Must be Valentine's Day!

Okay, so a condom isn't a part of everyone's Valentine's Day. But since the condom first hit the world many thousands of years ago, it has protected millions of people from infection and prevented untold numbers of unintended pregnancies. Not too bad, eh? And Valentine's Day is the first day of National Condom Week, so it's a great time to remind family, friends, and romantic partners about just how fantastic condoms are. How about sharing The Truth About Condoms and Planned Parenthood's condom how-to video?

And of course, this week, and every week, women and men can find out about condoms, STD/STI prevention, and birth control, and also pick up supplies at their local Planned Parenthood health center.

Celebrating love,

Cecile Richards

Bush's New Appointee, What if Roe Fell

Anti-Family Planning Assistant Appointed
According to The Center for American Progress Action Fund, President Bush on Monday bestowed oversight of federal family planning programs to Susan Orr by appointing her Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Population Affairs at the Department of Health and Human Services. As such, she will be responsible for the department’s $283 million reproductive-health program which funds birth control, pregnancy tests, counseling, and screenings for sexually transmitted diseases, as well as a $30 million abstinence-only education program. Before joining HHS, Orr held a senior position at the Family Research Council, which opposes family planning, and was quoted in a 2000 article opposing requiring health insurance plans to cover contraceptives as saying, “It’s not about choice. It’s not about health care. It’s about making everyone collaborators with the culture of death.” As Orr was appointed “acting” secretary, she is not subject to the Senate confirmation process.

ACTION: AAUW supports the right of every woman to safe, accessible, affordable, and comprehensive family planning and reproductive health services and trusts that every woman has the ability to make her own informed choices regarding her reproductive life within the dictates of her own moral and religious beliefs. Further, AAUW believes that these deeply personal decisions should be made without governmental interference. AAUW members have made reproductive rights a policy principle since 1977. Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) called her appointment “absurd,” and many women’s rights and reproductive health advocates agree. If you would like to send a message to President Bush, visit Planned Parenthood’s website and sign a petition opposing Orr’s appointment.

What if Roe Fell?

A Third Parental Notification Ballot Initiative

The following is a report from the California Coalition on Reproductive Freedom (CCRF) hearings held in September. I will be checking this out and will keep you up-to-date as much as possible.

The previously discussed Sexual Abuse Reporting Initiative has been approved for signature gathering but seems to have been abandoned. The same folks have instead filed a third version of the parental notification for abortion initiative, which is essentially a photocopy of Propositions 73 and 85 but with a few new ideas thrown in. You can check the latest status of all the ballot initiatives at the Secretary of State's website .

Because the initiative would be on the November 2008 ballot along with the presidential election, there will many more voters to educate. Partnership and input with diverse community groups, particularly those of you based in communities of color, will be critical to ensure that the message and strategy development for this initiative is appropriate from the very beginning. Steve Smith from Dewey Square and Maggie Linden from Ogilvy PR Worldwide are once again working with Planned Parenthood on focus groups and message development. At the CCRF meeting, Steve encouraged people or organizations who would like to inform the process to contact him at SSmith@deweysquare.com or 916 447 4099.

You will also be kept informed of any developments and news in the coming weeks via this list-serve.

Oppose Susan Orr as Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Population Affairs

An annoucement from Planned Parenthood:
The Bush administration has announced the appointment of staunchly anti-birth control Susan Orr to a leadership role in the Office of Population Affairs.

Orr's anti-reproductive health stance is clear. She applauded President Bush's reinstatement of the global gag rule and urged him to revoke approval for mifepristone (formerly known as RU-486) — both while working for the notoriously anti-choice, anti-birth control, anti-sex education organization, the Family Research Council.

It is hard to imagine a more mismatched role for Susan Orr than one in the Office of Population Affairs, the department that advises the secretary of health on policies concerning reproductive health.

In other words, a virulently anti-family planning radical is in charge of family planning. Appointments don't get more egregious than this.
